What is Assisted Living? By Nancy Ludin, CEO of the Jewish Pavilion

Many people call the Orlando Senior Help Desk at the Jewish Pavilion
(407-678-9363) for assisted living. What they often really want is assistance with living and an Assisted Living Community may or may not meet their needs.

What is Assisted Living?
Assisted living communities are for seniors who want to remain “independent” in a home-like setting but need assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs), such as eating, bathing, dressing, maintaining good hygiene and toileting. The person in assisted living typically pays monthly rent for a private apartment or room, and in most cases, an additional fee for the level of care needed.
Residents generally have access to shared common areas include dining and activity rooms for games, arts and crafts, cooking projects, movies library books   etc. as well as outdoor spaces. Assisted living communities range from those offering basics like daily meals and activities to those with luxury accommodations and amenities, such as spas and bars.
Assisted living communities are typically equipped with 24-hour on-site staff. They provide up to three prepared meals a day, as well as housekeeping and some transportation services.
Assisted living communities range in size from as few as 5 residents to 100+ people. Assisted living facilities allow a person to continue living “independently”, even with chronic health conditions, memory loss or mobility issues.
While most seniors face major adjustments when transitioning to an elder-care community, Jewish seniors face additional challenges. Not only do they lose their homes, and many of their friends, but they also lose ties to their cultural heritage.  This is where the Jewish Pavilion, a 501c3 non-profit, steps in.  The Pavilion serves as a resource that provides room visits, festive holiday celebrations, and more to 450 Jewish residents in fifty facilities for seniors.  The Jewish Pavilion promotes inclusion, and thousands of seniors of all faiths are welcomed into our programs. www.JewishPavilion.org
