SUMMARY:History Lecture: “Hello Sunshine! Selling Florida Through the Art of Postcards”
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a talk entitled "Hello Sunshine! Selling Florida Through the Art of Postcards"" by Christy Grieger.\n\nThis talk will focus on the history of Winter Park and the state of Florida using colorful\, informative postcards as a guide.\n\n \n\nIn the spring of 2023\, the Winter Park History Museum was gifted with a comprehensive collection of Winter Park postcards donated by Rick Frazee. The Frazee collection contains over 1\,000 Winter Park postcards detailing town life during the 1900s - 1970s. It became the inspiration for the Hello Sunshine exhibit. The WPHM has collaborated with Orange County Regional History Center\, the Newberry Library\, and Florida Memory for supporting material and specialty postcard images of Florida to enhance the exhibit and widen the exhibit's scope.\n\n \n\nOur state-wide history is portrayed by postcards depicting Florida's Native Americans\, early pioneers\, real estate promotion and the establishment and growth of cities. Industries including timber\, citrus\, vegetables\, sugar\, and cotton will tell the story of Florida's early commerce. The successful story of marketing Florida as a "vacation destination" will be highlighted with postcards of tourist attractions\, hotels\, and resorts.\n\n\n\nChristy Grieger is the Executive Director of the Winter Park History Museum\, a position she has held since 2021. She started at the museum as a part-time employee in 2018. Originally from Tampa\, Florida\, she holds a Bachelors Degree in Sociology form the University of Pittsburg where she was a record-breaking member of the swim team. Grieger has been a long-time history buff\, has a passion for antiquing\, and is an amateur photographer. Grieger also currently serves as a member of the Board of Directors for the Seminole County Historical Society.\n\n \n\nLight refreshments will be served. The talk is free\, and open to the public! For more information\, please call 407-665-2489 or visit http://www.seminolecountyhistoricalsociety.com/.
