\nThe Professional Women'\;s Luncheon has set the standard for showcasing successful women in an environment that is inspiring and exciting. \; At each lunch\, a high profile woman shares her life story\, giving attendees a look into the struggles and accomplishments of women throughout Central Florida. \; Likewise\, the luncheon is attended by successful business women who participate in special activities designed to facilitate introductions.

There are few people who have had a bigger impact on our region than Sr. Ann Kendrick\, one of the three founders of the Hope Community Center.

\n\n

Better known as the "\;Apopka Nuns\,"\; Sisters Cathy Gorman\, Gail Grimes and Ann Kendrick came to Apopka in the early 1970s to work with farmworkers and the working poor. \;

\n\n

These Roman Catholic nuns\, members of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur\, hoped to provide this underserved community with the resources needed to move toward social and economic justice.

\n\n

According to the Hope Community Center'\;s website\, Sister Ann likes to say that for the first couple of years\, they were mostly just &ldquo\;hanging out&rdquo\; in the African American and Latino \;communities of farmworkers and citrus pickers\, getting to know the people and finding out what they really wanted. \;

\n\n

By working with the community rather than for them\, the sisters served as catalysts for social change that came from the people. \;

\n\n

Over the decades\, the ministry partnered with residents and local groups to address social problems such as illiteracy\, lack of access to healthcare\, and economic injustices. Along the way\, they spearheaded the creation of six separate nonprofits\, and literally\, thousands of lives were changed for the better. \;

\n\n

And it all started with \;community.
