DESCRIPTION:The Perilous World Where Boys Become Men In 1950\, most Americans had completed the transition from adolescence to adulthood by age 21 or so. Today\, it's more likely to be by age 30. It's a new stage of development\, and Kimmel is our tour guide in this presentation based on his best-selling book\, GUYLAND. Based on interviews with more than 400 young people across the country\, Kimmel offers a glimpse of why so many guys are adrift through their 20s\, and offers a road map towards a more conscious adulthood. \n\n\n\nMichael Kimmel is one of the world's leading experts on men and masculinities. He is Distinguished Professor of Sociology and Gender Studies at Stony Brook University. Among his many books are Manhood in America\, Angry White Men\, The Politics of Manhood\, The Gendered Society\, and the bestseller Guyland: The Perilous World Where Boys Become Men. With funding from the MacArthur Foundation\, he founded the Center for the Study of Men and Masculinities at Stony Brook University in 2013.\n\n\n\n\n\nA tireless advocate of engaging men to support gender equality\, Michael has lectured at more than 300 colleges\, universities\, and high schools. He has delivered the International Women's Day annual lecture at the European Parliament\, the European Commission\, and the Council of Europe\, and he has worked with the Ministers for Gender Equality of Norway\, Denmark\, and Sweden in developing programs for boys and men. He consults widely with corporations\, NGOs\, and public sector organizations on gender equity issues.\n\n\n\nMichael was recently called "the world's most prominent male feminist" in The Guardian newspaper in London.\n\n\n\nThe presentation will conclude with a Q&A period.
