SANFORD, Fla. (Oct. 5, 2020) - The Foundation for Seminole State College of Florida presented the Champion of Philanthropy Award to the Art & Phyllis Grindle Foundation on Friday, Oct. 2, in recognition of the organization’s strong support of the College’s programs and services.
The Art & Phyllis Grindle Foundation is a family foundation established in 2003 to provide educational opportunities and help to animals in need. Over their 17 years of giving, their support to the College totals over $1.5 million. Their most recent gift of $80,000 will be used for scholarship and program support at the College.
In 2006 the Art and Phyllis Grindle Honors Institute, which houses the College’s Honors Diploma Program, Honors Certificate Program and the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, was established. For eight of the last nine years, Grindle Honors Institute students have been awarded the prestigious Jack Kent Cooke Undergraduate Transfer Scholarship, receiving over $1 million in total scholarship awards.
“The Art & Phyllis Grindle Foundation has been a true champion of Seminole State,” said Dr. John Gyllin, vice president of resource and economic development at Seminole State and executive director of the Foundation at the College. “The Art & Phyllis Grindle Foundation’s support for the Honors program that bears their name, has propelled the College into the national spotlight for the record number of Jack Kent Cooke Scholars that have graduated from Seminole State. We are so fortunate to be able to call them our partners in expanding educational opportunities for our community and present them with the Champion of Philanthropy Award.”
The award is typically announced during the Foundation’s annual Celebration of Giving in August, but due to the coronavirus pandemic, the event was canceled for the safety of all the attendees. The award was instead presented virtually by Seminole State College President Dr. Georgia Lorenz.
