Financing In-Home Care: Options for Aging in Place

At Right at Home, we know, most adults and adults living with chronic health conditions want to live at home for as long as possible. They want comfort, familiarity, and independence rather than moving to an assisted living residence. Fortunately, when everyday tasks become harder to manage alone, in-home care can be the key to aging in place safely and with dignity.

Still, families often ask the same pressing question: “How are we going to pay for this?”

Here’s a breakdown of the most common ways to pay for home care, and how Right at Home helps clients find the best solution for their situation.

Start With Your Own Financial Resources

Many families begin by using personal savings or income to cover the cost of home care. This might include:

  • Retirement income (Social Security, pensions)
  • Investment accounts
  • Home equity (including reverse mortgages)
  • Support from family members

Using personal funds gives you more flexibility to choose the care you want, when you want it. Right at Home can help you design a care plan that fits your budget and needs, from a few hours a week to full-time support.

Medicare: Targeted Benefit for Certain Medicare Beneficiaries With Dementia

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) has a new program, called Guiding an Improved Dementia Experience (GUIDE), to support people with dementia who have Original Medicare (Parts A and B). Qualifying Medicare beneficiaries receive a suite of supportive services, including a sample pack of respite hours, a 24/7 hotline to clinicians with dementia expertise who facilitate medication management, and coordination with other providers. For beneficiaries who elect to receive the services, there is no deductible or copay.

Right at Home has a strategic alliance to test a GUIDE model with PocketRN, a leading provider of virtual nursing care. Through this alliance, PocketRN will assess the client’s condition, reimburse Right at Home for the home care agency role in the assessment process, and then Right at Home will provide the respite care allowance while PocketRN delivers the 24/7 hotline, nurse virtual check-ins, care coordination, medication management, and family caregiver dementia training. PocketRN assigns a nurse to the beneficiary, which leads to a trustworthy relationship.  Check with your local Right at Home office to find out what’s available through GUIDE.

Medicaid: State-Supported Options for Ongoing Care

Medicaid is a joint federal-state program that can cover long-term in-home care for people with limited income and assets. Coverage and eligibility vary by state, but many states offer waivers for home- and community- based services or similar programs that allow individuals to receive care at home instead of in a nursing facility.

If your loved one qualifies, Medicaid can be a valuable long-term option. Some Right at Home offices participate in their state Medicaid waiver programs.

Long-Term Care Insurance: A Policy Worth Looking Into

If your loved one has long-term care insurance, it may cover some or all of the costs of in-home care. Policies vary widely, so it’s important to:

  • Review what services are covered.
  • Confirm whether the policy covers licensed home care agencies like Right at Home.
  • Check for any waiting periods or daily coverage limits.

We often work directly with long-term care insurers to simplify billing and paperwork, so you can focus on what matters—your family’s well-being.

Veterans Benefits: Support for Those Who Served

Veterans and surviving spouses may be eligible for in-home care assistance through their U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) health care benefits. Many Right at Home locations participate in the VA Community Care Network.  Home care assistance may also be available to a select few veterans who qualify for the VA Aid and Attendance benefit. Right at Home can help you connect with the right resources to determine eligibility and start the process.
