First Graders Explore Community Dynamics Through Project-Based Learning

According to a 2024 World Metrics study, project-based learning improves academic performance in STEM subjects by 23%. A host of benefits, including improved critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving and collaboration skills are also linked.

First graders at Seminole Science Charter School (SSCS) reinforced this methodology by recently designing and building their own miniature community. Made up of key facilities like schools, libraries, fire stations and grocery stores, the hands-on project supported their social studies lesson: understanding the essential components of a community and why they are important to the lives of its residents. The students presented “community tours” to teachers and staff, demonstrating their grasp of the lesson.

SSCS is devoted to enriching the lives of students with the integration of STEM curriculum, providing a diverse student population with a well-rounded educational experience.
