Heritage Jubilee 2024 Honors MLK And Excellence In Education

SANFORD, Fla. (Jan. 10, 2024) – The Black Faculty and Staff Association (BFSA) at Seminole State College of Florida will present Heritage Jubilee 2024: A Celebration of Black Achievement on Friday, Jan. 19, at 7 p.m. at the College’s Sanford/Lake Mary Campus (building C).
Established over 40 years ago by the Afro-American Society at Seminole State, Heritage Jubilee commemorates the life and achievements of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. while promoting his ideals of equality, justice and social change. The annual event has proven to be a powerful and unifying way to bring students, faculty, staff and the community together to reflect on Dr. King’s contributions and to continue his work.
The theme for this year’s event is “Education: A Bridge to Success,” and BFSA will recognize Ingrid Burton Nathan and Seminole County Public Schools (SCPS) Superintendent Serita Beamon as its honorees. At the age of 14, Burton Nathan etched her name in history by becoming the pioneering black student to integrate Sanford Middle School in 1964. Meanwhile, Beamon holds the distinction of being the first African American woman to lead SCPS.
This year, BFSA will launch a new initiative to help further the educational advancement of students through scholarships provided during this celebration. This effort aims to further honor Dr. King’s legacy and underscores Seminole State’s commitment to fostering a community that actively supports the educational advancement and empowerment of all students. Donations can be made to the Black Faculty and Staff Association Scholarship through the Foundation for Seminole State College.
Heritage Jubilee will include performances by Expressly You School of the Arts, 2023 Martin Luther King Jr. Oratorical Contest winner Omotola Alalade, and Arkeshia Graham & Trebled Clef Entertainment. The event is free and open to the public. All are invited to join BFSA for an evening of celebration, inspiration and community bonding.
