 As Hurricane Milton approached Central Florida, Matt Rose, Chief Experience Officer of Tech Rage IT, was featured in the Orlando Business Journal, where he emphasized the importance of understanding how much downtime a business can tolerate and what data loss it can afford.

To help businesses navigate the storm, Rose offered the following practical advice, which was highlighted in the publication:

  1. Alternative Work Assignments: Plan for alternative work arrangements to maintain continuity. Remote employees can support critical functions, like payroll, while local staff prepares for the storm.
  2. Data Backup Verification: Ensure backups are current and accessible. If IT services are outsourced, confirm via email that backups are up to date.
  3. Communication Plan: Develop a communication plan to reach employees, consultants, and vendors during an active disaster, and print critical information like emergency contacts and account details.
  4. Insurance Verification: Check insurance coverage for both physical and digital assets, as cyber insurance is vital for businesses reliant on digital data.

Additionally, year-round practices to enhance storm readiness include:

  • Secure Remote Access: Ensure secure internet connections for remote employees using VPNs or Secure Access Service Edge (SASE) for enhanced security.
  • VoIP Phone Systems: Implement Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) systems to enable seamless communication without sharing personal cell phone numbers.

“Only about 54% of organizations are prepared this way,” said Rose. “It’s crucial to think ahead and establish a basic recovery outline.”

Rose encouraged businesses to partner with IT providers that offer comprehensive disaster recovery and backup solutions, 24/7 support, employee training, cybersecurity expertise, and proactive monitoring to minimize disruptions during crises.
