Are you looking for a new job? Words of Wisdom for Job Seekers

So you’re looking for a new job. What are you doing in your search?

If you’re throwing your resume at Indeed postings and hoping employer responses boomerang back at you, you will be missing out. Not every employer posts on Indeed (they often only post their job ad on 1-2 sites) plus it’s easy to get lost in the sea of applications.

And many employers may not officially post their job opening at all.

As a job seeker, you should diversify your efforts.

  • Attend in-person job fairs and events! There’s nothing like meeting people face-to-face for networking.
  • Reach out to friends, colleagues, former mentors and teachers, and anyone else you can tell about your job seeking efforts. You never know what introductions and open doors may result from those conversations!
  • Networking online can be powerful too. Local Facebook groups, such as “Job seekers in [your city]” or “[Your profession] job seekers'' may help. You can give and receive advice from other people in your profession or area. Some groups allow you to post anonymously for career advice as well.

Remember to not put your eggs all in one basket. It is frustrating to try so hard to find a job and send in a perfect cover letter and resume, then hear crickets from the employers’ side; but remember that there are also employers out there looking for the perfect candidate and can’t find one.
