ICYMI: Rescue Outreach Mission Featured in Lake Mary Life

Sanford, Fla. (June 5, 2023) - Earlier this year, Seminole County’s only emergency homeless shelter was the featured non-profit in Lake Mary Life publications. It’s a great opportunity for readers to understand how this critical organization is saving lives.

The center point of the article was about how the organization had helped more than 200 individuals over the past 12 months – more than double the same time period a year ago. It’s a remarkable achievement but is still well short of the need for these services in our community.

“Even though we have tremendously increased the number of individuals who we helped, we still have a waiting list for people needing shelter,” says Chris Ham, executive director, Rescue Outreach Mission. “I am proud of the work our staff and board are doing here and honored Lake Mary Life took the opportunity to tell just a bit of our story.”

While the numbers are great, it’s also the unique ways the organization has embraced to help provide these key services. For instance, in the article, readers are shown how Rescue Outreach Mission provides healthy meal options with its hydroponic garden in partnership with Feed Hunger Now.

At the heart of its services, however, is a housing-first approach. For many of Seminole County’s homeless, there are many issues that need to be solved, such as transportation, childcare and employment. But the organization works to find housing – a key to starting the new life wanted by so many of the Mission’s guests.

“I used to have the same preconceived notions about the homeless as so many people do,” Ham says. “Most of the people we really help want to see change in their lives, and we’re here to help them achieve that change.”
