Program Info
Presented annually, the Metro Orlando EDC's William C. Schwartz Industry Innovation Awards event recognizes and celebrates organizations who have had a significant impact on the region and in their respective fields for innovative practices, products and ideas. Winners include one organization from each county in the region – Orange, Seminole, Lake, Osceola – as well as the City of Orlando and the Florida High Tech Corridor Council.
The program is named in honor of the late William C. Schwartz, an avid Orlando community leader, business pioneer and innovator within the field of optics and photonics. He worked at Boeing and Lockheed Martin helping to develop some of the first lasers for the United States Army used in the Vietnam War. Schwartz left Martin in 1968 and founded International Laser Systems in Orlando which was acquired by Martin Marietta in 1983. After a brief retirement Schwartz founded Electro-Optics, also based in Orlando. SEO produced laser systems for traffic control, weapons training and a host of applications for both the military and commercial markets.
