Description
March 1, 2024 marks the beginning of a month-long celebration dedicated to the commemoration of archaeology in the State of Florida. Florida Archaeology Month has been sponsored for over thirty years by the Florida Public Archaeology Network (FPAN), the Florida Anthropological Society, the Florida Archaeological Council, and the Florida Division of Historical Resources.
Events in Seminole County will be focused around "Archaeology in Seminole County Day" on Monday, March 25, 2024. Several local nonprofits have banded together to sponsor four events celebrating the purpose and place of archaeology in Seminole County.
The day's events will begin at the historic Page Jackson Cemetery in Sanford. Beginning at 11:30am, the Central Florida Cemetery Project will be hosting a tour of Page Jackson Cemetery and a demonstration of cemetery preservation techniques. The event is free and open to the public. Jennifer Eve of the Central Florida Cemetery Project said that the reason their group decided to participate in Archaeology Day is because she believes that "preserving the history that cemeteries contain is so important. A headstone may be the only evidence that eventually remains of a person's life."
A Lunch and Learn Talk entitled "Preservation 101: Museum Tips You Can Use at Home" will be given by Bennett Lloyd, Coordinator, Museum of Seminole County History in conjunction with the Central Florida Anthropological Society and the Society for Historic Casselberry. It will be held at the Museum of Seminole County History. Tickets are required for the talk which will be limited to the first 25 participants. Tickets may be purchased for $15 each at www.historiccasselberry.com. The ticket includes admission to the museum, admission to the guest talk, and a catered brown bag picnic lunch.
A guest reception for those interested in learning more about the history and current state of archaeology in the city of Sanford will be held at 4:00pm at the Sanford Museum located at 520 E 1st St, Sanford, FL 32771. This event is sponsored by the Sanford Museum/City of Sanford & the Seminole Cultural Arts Council (SCAC). The reception is free and open to the public.
The day's events will conclude with a guest lecture given by Sarah Miller, Regional Director for the Northeast and East Central Centers of the Florida Public Archaeology Network hosted by Flagler College in St. Augustine, and her staff. The talk, entitled "Florida's First People," will be held at the North (Sanford) Branch of the Seminole County Public Library at 150 N. Palmetto Avenue, Sanford FL 32771 beginning at 6pm. The talk is sponsored by Florida Public Archaeology Network (FPAN) & Seminole County Parks & Recreation Department. The guest lecture is also free and open to the public.
