Stories We Were Never Told: Visualizing the Holocaust in Bulgaria & Beyond

A powerful new exhibition is coming to the Holocaust Center in January 2026.

"Stories We Were Never Told" sheds light on a chapter of Holocaust history that has long been overlooked. For decades, the story of the Holocaust in Bulgaria was under-researched, under-represented, and shaped by political and economic interests that led many to believe there was no Holocaust in Bulgaria. But the experiences of the Jewish people who lived through these events tell a very different story.

This exhibition bridges the gaps between memory, myth, and documentation. Through photographs, archival films, maps, paintings, documents, narration, and on-location recordings, "Stories We Were Never Told" connects the events in Bulgaria to the broader history of the Holocaust across Europe. It brings forward the human stories, the policies, the consequences, and the voices that were never fully seen or heard.
