All Orlando Health Legacy Hospitals Receive ‘A’ Grades For Patient Safety

All Orlando Health legacy hospitals have received ‘A’ grades from the Leapfrog Group, an independent nonprofit organization committed to driving quality, safety and transparency in the United States health system.

Orlando Health Orlando Regional Medical Center (ORMC), Orlando Health South Lake Hospital, Orlando Health Dr. P. Phillips Hospital, Orlando Health – Health Central Hospital, Orlando Health Horizon West Hospital and Orlando Health South Seminole Hospital earned ‘A’ grades for patient safety in the fall 2024 reporting period.

This marks the 13th consecutive ‘A’ grade for Orlando Health South Lake and the seventh ‘A’ grade in a row for Orlando Health ORMC and Orlando Health Dr. P. Phillips.

Orlando Health St. Cloud Hospital and Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital have improved to ‘B’ grades through continued enhancements to care and quality advances at each hospital since joining Orlando Health in 2020.

“The ‘A’ grades reflect our unwavering commitment to maintaining the highest standards of safety and quality healthcare for our patients,” said George Ralls, MD, chief medical officer, Orlando Health. “In keeping with our mission to improve the health and quality of life of the individuals and communities we serve, we will continue to strive towards achieving ‘A’ grades at every Orlando Health hospital.”

Hospitals acquired by Orlando Health in October 2024 received grades based on data submitted to the Leapfrog Group by previous owners. Grades for the eight hospitals – five located in Birmingham, Alabama and three located on the east coast of Florida – ranged from ‘A’ to ‘D’.

Due to the lag in clinical outcomes data available to national hospital rating services such as The Leapfrog Group, safety grades and quality rankings for these hospitals will be impacted by the previous owner’s data until at least 2027.

Immediately upon assuming operations of these hospitals, Orlando Health began the process of assessments and implementation of focused improvements that will elevate care for our patients to the high standard maintained in facilities throughout the rest of the healthcare system.

The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is the only hospital ratings program exclusively based on hospital prevention of medical errors, infections and injuries that cause more than 500 mortalities a day nationally. The Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade is peer-reviewed, fully transparent and free to the public.
