The City of Sanford has been recognized by the American Public Works Association (APWA) Florida Chapter as a 2026 Project of the Year award winner in the Disaster or Emergency Construction Repair category for its 18-Inch Diameter Force Main Replacement Project.
The award honors outstanding public works projects that demonstrate excellence in management, construction, collaboration, and community impact. Sanford’s project was selected from submissions across the state of Florida.
The 18-inch diameter force main is a critical component of the City’s wastewater infrastructure, serving as a major transmission line that conveys wastewater from lift stations to the City’s wastewater treatment facility. When the force main experienced failure and structural concerns, the City’s Public Works/Utilities Department initiated an emergency response to replace the line swiftly and safely, minimizing service interruptions, reducing environmental risk, and protecting public health.
Through coordinated efforts between City staff and project partner Cathcart Construction, the emergency replacement was completed efficiently, restoring system reliability and strengthening the long-term resiliency of Sanford’s wastewater system.
“This project represents the dedication and professionalism of our Public Works and Utilities team,” said Brynt Johnson, Public Works and Utilities Director. “Their quick action and strong partnership with Cathcart Construction ensured that a critical piece of infrastructure was repaired with minimal impact.”
This recognition highlights the City of Sanford’s continued commitment to investing in essential infrastructure, responding effectively to emergencies, and delivering reliable public services to the community.
