Heart disease remains one of the leading causes of death for both men and women in the United States. Each year, more than one million Americans experience a heart attack, and tragically, many of these events are fatal.
A heart attack occurs when blood flow through one or more of the coronary arteries becomes suddenly blocked. These arteries supply oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscle. When a blockage occurs – most often because a fatty plaque ruptures and forms a clot – the heart muscle is deprived of oxygen. Without prompt treatment, that portion of the heart muscle begins to die.
Immediate medical intervention is critical. Blood flow can often be restored with clot-dissolving medications or with a catheter-based procedure that physically opens the blocked artery. The faster treatment is provided, the greater the chance of limiting permanent heart damage.
Call 911 Immediately if You Experience:
- Crushing chest pain, pressure, or discomfort
- Pain spreading to the arms, neck, jaw, or upper body
- Shortness of breath
- Nausea
- Cold sweats
- Lightheadedness or fainting
If you or someone you know may be having a heart attack, call 911 right away. Do not attempt to drive yourself to the hospital, and do not have someone else drive you unless emergency medical services are unavailable. An ambulance provides life-saving care en route to the hospital.
If prescribed medication for angina (chest pain) does not relieve symptoms as it normally would, call 911 immediately.
While waiting for emergency responders, the individual may chew and swallow one regular-strength or baby aspirin, if not allergic and able to do so safely. Aspirin can help reduce blood clotting and may limit heart damage.
Time Matters
The first hour after symptoms begin is often referred to as the “golden hour.” Rapid treatment can prevent life-threatening complications such as dangerous heart rhythm disturbances, heart failure, and death. Unfortunately, many people delay seeking care for two hours or more, significantly increasing their risk of permanent damage.
Effective Treatments Are Available
The encouraging news is that modern medical therapies are highly effective when administered quickly. Early treatment can save lives and dramatically reduce long-term disability.
