What is Tour de Turtles?
Tour de Turtles is an annual event that brings together researchers from the Sea Turtle Conservancy and Disney at Disney’s Vero Beach Resort to track two female turtles as they return to the ocean after laying their eggs.
This year’s turtles – named Ariel and Moana after the iconic Disney Princesses – will be tracked with other sea turtles over a three-month span to see who swims the furthest. Whoever does wins the Tour de Turtles race!
How does Disney help sea turtles?
Tour de Turtles is one of many ways that Disney helps protect sea turtles. Since 2007, we’ve documented more than 1.8 million sea turtle hatchlings from over 24,000 nests near Vero Beach. Here's a little more about how this has made a difference:
- Tracking turtles annually has helped biologists monitor migration patterns and discover more about how to best protect this endangered species.
- Disney has also helped advance new technology focused on tracking water temperatures and dive patterns.
- Disney Cruise Line supported local students from Florida nonprofit Club Esteem through the Sea Turtle Conservancy's Sea Turtle Tech Program with special, hands-on learning experiences.
