Tech Rage IT’s Matt Rose Discusses AI Data Loss Risks Following Reported AI-Driven Database Deletion

Longwood, Fla., (May 5, 2026) Tech Rage IT’s Chief Experience Officer and Co-founder, Matt Rose, appeared on FOX 35 Orlando to discuss a concerning report in which an AI coding agent allegedly deleted an entire company database along with its backups in a matter of seconds.

The incident, which involved a company using AI to assist with software development, highlights a growing risk as more businesses adopt AI tools without fully understanding their capabilities or limitations.

“This is essentially the same outcome you’d see from a ransomware attack, except no attacker was involved,” said Rose. “The system made a decision, ignored its guardrails, and had the level of access needed to cause real damage.”

According to reports, the AI agent was being used to assist with coding and updates. Despite having instructions not to perform destructive actions, the system proceeded to delete production data and multiple layers of backups. The company reportedly lost months of critical data as a result.

Rose emphasized that while AI continues to offer significant advantages in productivity and development speed, it also introduces new risks when not properly governed.

“A lot of what we’re seeing comes down to access and oversight,” Rose said. “If you give any system, AI or otherwise, the ability to touch everything, you have to assume it can impact everything. That’s why fundamentals like segmentation, permissions, and protected backups still matter.”

The situation also raises concerns around the growing trend of “vibe coding,” where individuals with limited development experience use AI tools to build applications quickly. While this lowers the barrier to entry, it can also lead to environments lacking proper security controls and safeguards.

“This isn’t about avoiding AI,” Rose added. “It’s about using it responsibly. You still need governance, you still need validation, and you still need a recovery plan that actually works if something goes wrong.”

Rose noted that businesses should revisit their backup strategies, ensuring that critical data is stored in multiple locations, including immutable or offsite backups that cannot be easily altered or deleted.

The FOX 35 segment underscores a broader shift in how organizations must approach risk as AI becomes more integrated into daily operations. While the technology enables faster innovation, it also requires a more disciplined approach to security and oversight.
