A new survey of 750 small business owners found that nearly three in four now use AI in some form. The smallest businesses are adopting it the slowest, even though routine tasks like scheduling and payroll are where the report found real savings.
A recent report from Homebase, the 2026 Main Street AI Gap Report, surveyed 750 small business owners and operators and found that AI adoption rose from 64 percent in 2025 to 74 percent in 2026. Among owners already using AI, 89 percent reported a positive effect on their business and 87 percent said it saved them time. The same report shows a widening gap by size. Eighty-one percent of businesses with $5 million or more in revenue use AI, compared with 54 percent of those under $500,000.
The most useful detail in the report is where the savings came from. Owners using AI for both scheduling and payroll reported saving an average of 7.7 hours and $343 a month, or more than $4,100 a year. Those are ordinary back office tasks. Small businesses do not need to master every AI tool to see a return. The work is identifying the repetitive tasks that take up staff time each week, such as building schedules, preparing reports, answering routine customer inquiries and organizing data, and applying AI to those first.
Across Central Florida, the small and mid-sized businesses getting results follow the same pattern. A weekly report that once took an afternoon to assemble gets drafted in minutes. Routine inquiries receive consistent first responses. Most of this happens inside tools the business already pays for, such as its email, spreadsheets and scheduling software.
The report also found that 62 percent of owners who have not adopted AI are still interested, with data privacy and mistakes as their top concerns. Those concerns are reasonable, and they are best handled by starting small. The businesses seeing results treat AI as an operational improvement tool. They choose one specific business problem, apply AI to it in a targeted way, review the output and expand to the next task once the first one is working.
