This Summer, Duke Energy Foundation Brings Together Customers And Communities To Help With Energy Bills

As rising temperatures drive up energy use, Duke Energy Foundation is helping connect families in need to available assistance. Duke Energy Foundation is contributing an additional $400,000 to the Share the Light Fund® to help customers facing financial hardship this summer – supporting agencies that connect people with utility assistance.

By the numbers: As extreme summer temperatures rise, Duke Energy Foundation is committing $400,000 across six states to help individuals and families keep their lights on and homes cool.

  • North Carolina: $100,000

  • South Carolina: $75,000

  • Florida: $75,000

  • Indiana: $50,000

  • Ohio & Kentucky: $100,000

Why it matters: This additional summer funding from the Foundation builds upon annual support given to the Share the Light Fund, which helps nearly 16,000 low-income households annually with past-due balances, deposits and reconnection charges. It brings total contributions from Duke Energy, its foundation, employees and customers to $11 million during the last three years.

“We know that behind every request for assistance is a story – a family, a friend, a community member working to get through a tough time,” said Amy Strecker, president of Duke Energy Foundation. “Through Share the Light Fund and our local partners, we’re able to support our neighbors in their moment of need.”

Between the lines: Donations are paired with local volunteer efforts. Duke Energy employees are rolling up their sleeves with organizations like Crisis Assistance Ministry to pack hygiene and energy-saving kits, distribute supplies and raise awareness of available financial help.

The big picture: For more than 40 years, Duke Energy and its Foundation have provided utility assistance to customers through programs now united under the Share the Light Fund – helping families through the hottest summers and coldest winters, when energy bills often spike hardest.

How you can help: Join Duke Energy in supporting neighbors in need. Donations – including one time or recurring contributions with options such as rounding up your monthly bill, are matched by Duke Energy and its Foundation.

Tools to stay cool – and save: In addition to financial assistance, Duke Energy offers more than a dozen tools and resources to help customers manage energy use and reduce costs, including:
