Transportation Options Help Central Florida Seniors Stay Independent

For many older adults, giving up driving can feel like a loss of independence. Fortunately, throughout Central Florida, there are transportation services designed specifically to help seniors remain active, connected, and able to access important appointments, shopping, and social activities.

The Orlando Senior Help Desk, a program of Jewish Pavilion Senior Services, often assists families searching for reliable transportation resources for older adults in Orange, Seminole, and Brevard counties. From medical appointments to grocery shopping and visits with loved ones, several excellent programs are available.

In Brevard County, Aging Matters in Brevard offers two valuable transportation programs. Senior TranServe serves residents age 55 and older who can get in and out of a vehicle independently. Once enrolled, seniors can arrange free rides by scheduling at least seven days in advance.

Another helpful Brevard County program is Vets Driving Vets, which provides free transportation for veterans to medical appointments, including visits to the VA Outpatient Clinic in Viera and other healthcare providers. Participants must be ambulatory and able to enter and exit the vehicle without assistance.

GoGoGrandparent, available nationwide, is another popular option for seniors who want flexible transportation. After creating an account, older adults can simply make a phone call to request affordable rides, grocery delivery, prescription pickups, or meal delivery services. Many rides are available within minutes. The service also includes safety features such as ride monitoring, driver screening, and accommodations for special needs.

In Orange and Seminole Counties, ACCESS LYNX provides shared door-to-door transportation for individuals who cannot use traditional public transportation because of a disability or functional limitation. Eligible riders must complete an application process before using the service.

Jewish Family Services of Greater Orlando also offers the RIDE program — Reliable Independent Drivers for the Elderly. Open to qualifying low-income seniors and adults with disabilities regardless of religion or background, the program provides up to two free round-trip rides each month within a ten-mile radius.

Some seniors may also qualify for transportation assistance through their Medicaid health plans. In many cases, these services cover transportation to and from medical appointments. Seniors and caregivers should contact their insurance providers directly to learn what benefits are available.

Seminole County residents may also benefit from SCOUT, an app-based, on-demand rideshare and micro-transit service. SCOUT has no fixed routes or schedules, allowing riders to travel when convenient. Seniors age 65 and older receive discounted fares and can track rides in real time through the app.

Reliable transportation can make an enormous difference in the lives of older adults. These programs help seniors remain engaged in their communities, maintain healthcare appointments, and continue living independently with dignity and confidence.
