Vicky Countess Coaching Challenges Common Bone Health Myth, Emphasizes Role of Protein in Strengthen

Certified Health Coach Vicky Countess of Vicky Countess Coaching is encouraging women to rethink long-held beliefs about bone health, particularly the idea that not drinking milk in childhood leads to weak bones later in life.
“I had a conversation with a woman recently who was really worried about her bones,” said Countess. “Her concern was that she didn’t drink much milk growing up. But the truth is, bone health is far more complex—and far more hopeful—than that.”
While calcium has long been associated with bone strength, Countess explains it is only one part of the equation. Approximately half of bone structure is made up of protein, primarily collagen, which serves as the foundational framework that calcium strengthens.
“Without adequate protein, there’s nothing solid for calcium to build on,” Countess said. “And unlike some nutrients, the body doesn’t store protein, so it must be consumed consistently each day.”
Countess recommends that many women aim for approximately 20–30 grams of protein per meal as a practical starting point, noting that nutrition, strength training, and daily habits all play essential roles in maintaining and improving bone health.
Her message offers reassurance to women who may feel concerned about past habits. “Bone health isn’t just about what you did—or didn’t do—years ago,” she said. “It’s about what you’re doing now. Women have more control than they’ve been led to believe.”
