A weekend on the floor with her grandchildren became the moment that crystallized what real strength training is for later in life.
ORLANDO, Fla. — Vicky Countess, certified Life Coach and Integrative Health Coach, is introducing a new way for women to think about strength, fitness, and aging: Grandparent Strong.
The concept came to her not in a gym, but on a lanai.
Last weekend, Countess was visiting her 6½-year-old grandson at his house — just seven doors down from her own — when he pulled her into his "office," the corner of the lanai where he keeps his toys. Within minutes she was down on the rug helping him finish a Lego creation while her 2-year-old granddaughter stacked blocks beside them.
"Somewhere between the Legos and pushing myself back up off that rug, it hit me," Countess said. "This is exactly what I'm training for. Not a marathon. Not a bikini body. Grandparent strong."
For Countess, Grandparent Strong means:
- Having the energy to keep up with grandchildren
- Being able to sit down on the floor and get back up again without a production
- Being able to lift a toddler in and out of a car seat every morning
- Living a life that's fracture-free, so a fall doesn't turn into a hospital stay
- Staying healthy enough to watch grandchildren grow up
- And, someday, dancing at their weddings
"That's the goal," Countess said. "So how do you actually get there? It's not a supplement. It's not a bootcamp. It's the everyday lifestyle choices, done consistently — not perfectly — that get you to grandparent strong."
That philosophy is the foundation of Countess's signature B.O.N.E.S. method, the framework she uses to guide the women she coaches toward stronger, more resilient bones and bodies. Details on each letter of the method will be shared in upcoming announcements.
Central to Countess's message is a distinction she says most people miss: Grandparent Strong is really about not fracturing.
"It's not just about what a DEXA scan tells you once every two years," Countess said. "Your bone density number is one data point. Your strength, your balance, your daily habits are what actually keep you upright and unbroken."
Through Vicky Countess Coaching, Countess helps women take a proactive, informed approach to bone health so they can stay strong for the moments that matter most — including the ones spent on the floor with the people they love.
