Over the past few weeks, we've been in the news a bit.
Unfortunately, it wasn't for something spectacular we did, or a seven-figure donation, or even just helping more people.
No, it was much more somber a discussion about how seniors are showing up at our center more and more these days.
Here's one story from Spectrum News 13, but we've also had visits from Fox 35 and others.
You cannot miss the number of people being priced out of their homes when they should be enjoying retirement. Since January, about 30% of the individuals seeking shelter are seniors (over 55), which is growing alarmingly higher every day. Many of these folks are now unable to work and Social Security is stagnant.
The issue is the overall cost of living. Rents are rising. Food costs are rising. Energy costs are rising. Gas prices are skyrocketing.
When you are on a fixed income with a small cost-of-living increase, you simply can't keep up, and, eventually, too many seniors end up here.
I've said many times I won't quit until every child has a home, but I need to revise it. I'm not going to quit until every child has a home - and can visit grandma at her home.
Will you join me in making sure our seniors are not forced to live on the streets? Just let me know you're willing to help by sending me email here and we'll find a way for you to be a part of the solution.
