There is always a train coming. The question is whether you hear it early or feel it when it hits.
In the movies, someone always puts their ear to the train tracks to check for danger. Sometimes they hear it in time. Sometimes they do not.
Business works the same way.
There is always a train coming. It might look like a younger competitor. A faster model. A smarter system. A new way of delivering value.
In 2000, Blockbuster dominated movie rentals. They had scale, influence, and strong studio relationships.
Then Reed Hastings introduced a different idea through Netflix. A flat monthly fee. Movies by mail. No late fees. Simple. Disruptive. Customer focused.
In less than a decade, the dominant player was gone.
The threat was not invisible. It was just underestimated.
If owners are not paying attention, the market will shift before they are ready. And once the train is around the corner, reaction time disappears.
Put your ear to the tracks daily.
Ask yourself:
• What new approach could disrupt us?
• Where are customer expectations changing?
• What processes need to evolve before we are forced to change them?
Reinvention is not optional. It is a discipline.
Listen early. Adjust early. Lead before you are forced to react.
