Your T-Score Might Be Lying to You: Vicky Countess Coaching Urges Women to Look Beyond Bone Density

Bone health coach says a little-known third measurement could change how women understand their fracture risk

SEMINOLE COUNTY, FL — October 1, 2026 — Vicky Countess Coaching is calling on women with osteopenia and osteoporosis to look past the single number that often shapes their diagnosis. According to founder Vicky Countess, the T-score from a standard bone density scan tells only part of the story. Relying on it alone can leave women with a false sense of security, or a false sense of doom.

"Your T-score might be lying to you, and I can prove it," said Countess. "That sounds bold, but it's true. Picture two women who are the same age, with the same T-score and the same diagnosis from their doctor. One of them fractures a hip. The other never does. If their numbers are exactly the same, how does that happen? It happens far more often than most people think."

A T-score comes from a DEXA scan. It measures how much bone mineral a person has compared with a healthy young adult. It does not measure bone quality, which is how well that bone is actually built. Countess notes that bone quality plays a major role in whether a bone breaks.

"Think of chalk versus a wooden pencil," Countess explained. "They can have the same density, but drop them both and the chalk shatters while the pencil holds up. Your bones work the same way. Density is only one piece of strength. Structure matters just as much."

Countess says many women don't know that there is a third measurement that can give a fuller picture of bone quality. Most doctors' offices do not run it unless a patient asks for it.

"There's a whole third number most women never hear about, and it could completely change how they understand their own risk," said Countess. "My goal is to help women ask better questions, walk into their doctor's appointments informed, and make decisions about their bone health with the full picture in front of them."

Through her coaching programs, Countess helps women understand their bone health results, have more productive conversations with their healthcare providers, and build habits that support stronger bones at every stage of life.
