Benetas Briefing New Podcast Episode: Family Time Planning

There are certain traditions that feel like they'll always be there.

Until one day you realize they won't.

This year our family was back in Pinehurst, North Carolina for the US Kids World and Team World Championships. We've made that trip for years, and it's become much more than a golf tournament. It's become part of our family's story.

This year also reminded me that those stories have chapters.

Our oldest daughter has now finished her competitive years there. She's in college, and that season has closed. Our younger daughter still has four opportunities left.

Not long ago, it felt like they both had all the time in the world.

Now one chapter has already passed.

That realization has very little to do with golf.

It's about how quickly the seasons of life move.

One of the places we always visit while we're there is the Payne Stewart statue. He won the 1999 U.S. Open at Pinehurst and passed away only a few months later. His accomplishments are certainly remembered, but what people still talk about most is the way he carried himself. His sportsmanship. His humility. His character.

It serves as a quiet reminder that achievements eventually become history, but character has a way of continuing through the people around us.

That idea connects closely to the work we do as financial planners.

People often assume financial planning is primarily about investments, retirement accounts, or taxes. Those things matter, but they're not the destination.

They're tools.

The real question is what those tools are helping you protect.

For some families, it's being able to travel together every year.

For others, it's having the flexibility to help grandchildren, spend more time with aging parents, or simply be present during seasons that won't come around again.

We tend to think of legacy as something we leave behind after we're gone.

In reality, much of our legacy is built while we're still here.

It's found in the time we make available, the traditions we continue, and the example we set long before anyone reads a will or receives an inheritance.

Financial planning can't create more time.

But thoughtful planning can help remove financial obstacles that keep us from spending our time where it matters most.

That's ultimately what we're trying to accomplish.

Not simply building wealth.
Creating the freedom to be present for the people who matter most.
